The biggest question on this ballot is, of course, the 3-part question about a proposed tax override. In brief, the city is limited in how much it can increase taxes without voter approval. Because of this and the rising costs of providing services, we have had to make significant cuts in the past 2 years and anticipate further cuts ahead. The current Fiscal Year 2025 budget made the following cuts to city department budgets and cuts to the Melrose Public Schools budget. What are our options? The current city budget for Fiscal Year 2025 is $104,140,412. The city has proposed three options to be voted on. Only one can take effect. An option must get at least 50% of the vote to take effect. If multiple options pass, the highest dollar amount would take effect. If no options get 50% of the vote, then the budget would not be increased. The options on the ballot are: 1A: Add $13.5 million to the city budget (“Strengthen”) 1B: Add $11.9 million to the city budget (“Repair”) 1C: Add $9.3 million to the city budget (“Stabilize”)

There is some assistance available for individuals who would face a hardship through specific Real Estate Tax Exemptions, the Elderly & Disabled Tax Relief Fund, and Water, Sewer, and Trash Discounts.
